Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a vibrant yellow-orange spice derived from a flowering plant in the ginger family, native to Southeast Asia. It has been used for thousands of years in Indian cuisine and traditional Ayurvedic medicine. The spice comes from the ground rhizome (underground stem) of the plant and has a warm, slightly bitter taste.
Curcumin is the primary active compound in turmeric, giving the spice its characteristic golden color. It makes up about 2-8% of turmeric powder and is responsible for many of its potential health benefits. Discovered in 1815, curcumin belongs to a class of compounds called curcuminoids.
