L-Methionine

Scientific Name: L-Methionine
Chemical formula: C₅H₁₁NO₂S
Solubility: Soluble in water (about 5.6 g/100 mL, 25°C), slightly soluble in ethanol, insoluble in ether
Stability: Stable in air, but easily oxidized to sulfoxide or sulfone (such as methionine sulfoxide)
Appreance: Powder

L-Methionine is an essential amino acid, with main functions including:

  • Protein synthesis: Involved in the composition of various proteins and peptides, especially sulfur-containing proteins (such as keratin).
  • Methyl donor: By generating S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) to support methylation reactions, it affects the synthesis of DNA, hormones (such as adrenaline), and phospholipids (such as phospholipids).
  • Detoxification and antioxidant: promote liver glutathione synthesis, assist in the excretion of heavy metals (such as lead and mercury) and toxins; Its derivative taurine has antioxidant properties.
  • Clinical application: Used for liver cirrhosis, depression (regulated by SAMe), and prevention of avian feather growth disorders in animal feed.

Attention: Excessive levels of homocysteine may increase and be associated with cardiovascular risk.
